P...p...p...penguins

We went to see the penguins at Birdland in Burford today. Isaac is very very keen on Octonauts so we figured a bit of real life penguin action would go down well (even though it wasn't the right sort of penguins to be Peso). The king penguins are so beautiful. The humboldts less so. We both have mixed feelings about these sorts of animal parks as there's something inherently sad about seeing beautiful creatures in small enclosures. The parks around here seem to be good on animal welfare and I know that captive breeding and research programmes are very important. It still doesn't sit very comfortably with either of us though. Right now we're not up to big expeditions to see wild penguins though...

We stopped at Rollright on the way home. Of course Isaac climbed the stones which wasn't quite what I had in mind.

Isabel decided she needed to carry two cats and a Pooh bear this afternoon. She then took them all out to the sand pit. I think there's as much sand in the house as there is outside now (and quite a lot in my bra).

Apparently I am fair game if I bend down to clear toys away. I told him he was responsible for his own well-being and I wasn't hanging onto him. I think he saw it as a challenge and clung on until I tipped him forwards to deliberately unseat him.

He wanted popcorn for dinner (we suggested he had pasta first). Popcorn is a big hit in this house - home made and without any toppings. Even the dog gets in on the act.

Shhhh

Sleep has been a bit random in the last few days with excitements galore so those that nap need to be left alone (even if it means a late bedtime as a result). She only just fits on this chair but at least she let me put her down so I could make dinner.

And this morning (at a not unreasonable hour) an excited boy opened his present from us.

A balloon

We have a party tomorrow and whilst I was shopping for some last bits and pieces we obtained a balloon. It's been great fun for both children (although obviously they've both fought over it too).

Messing about on the river

We just spent a lovely couple of days staying with my uncle down on the south coast. The visit was long overdue and I wasn't sure how I would feel about seeing him. He is my Dad's brother and since Dad's death (9 years ago) it's been difficult seeing my uncle because of the resemblance. Enough years have passed now though that it wasn't painful to go.

We were lucky to have a private tour of a local big house which has stunning views over Lepe beach to Cowes.

The children both enjoyed the garden tour and were running around a lot.

Isabel continued her apple obsession.

The house that my uncle owns has its own spectacular gardens and everyone enjoys the water features (the dog could be located by his splashing).

We braved the pool for a quick dip - one of us squealed at how cold the water was....

And then we went on a boat trip down the Beaulieu river. It's Cowes week so we got to see lots of yachts.

Isaac sang songs to entertain us on the way home.

Isabel entertained herself.
